Anne engages her work as one who senses how to bring an author’s voice to its truest form, revealing herself as a thoughtful, conscientious, and courageous editor, a rarity in the hurried world of publishing in these times.

SERVICES

As the literary editor for a small independent press, I was responsible for soliciting, acquiring, editing, and marketing the books we published. I am experienced in communicating with authors and agents in all phases of the publishing process, from acquisition to publication. Email me at mcgrath.mosto@gmail.com for more information or to book an appointment.

Manuscript Consultation

Starts with a free 15-minute initial consultation to give me a sense of your project. Next, I will read your work and provide editorial notes and line edits on the manuscript, using Track Changes. The consultation includes a combination of a 30-60 minute Zoom or phone conversation, an insightful editorial letter with feedback, and developmental suggestions. I can suggest places to pitch your work, authors to read, and other tailored resources to strengthen your writing skills. You will leave with what you need to revise your own work.

Starting at $150 for up to 3,000 words. Book-length projects start at $1,200. (50,000 words)

Marketing & Publicity Consultation

Starts with a free phone consultation to give me a sense of your project. Next, we will meet on Zoom or by phone for 30-40 minutes to discuss where to submit your book-length manuscript and how to present the detailed marketing plan that publishers want to see. If you already have a publisher, I will help you design a marketing and publicity campaign. You will be given written notes with the next steps on a shared Google Doc.

Starting at $250. Fees for ongoing support will depend on the scope of the work.

Query Letter Review

I will read your query letter, scan your manuscript, and make recommendations for improvement to your package. If you would like me to tailor your letter to a specific press and research the submission criteria for you, there is an additional fee.

Starting at $200

Testimonials

I consider myself among the lucky ones to have worked with Anne. Not only is she a brilliant editor, but she is also a shepherd in every sense of the word: a wise collaborator, ardent ally, and fierce advocate fully invested in her clients’ work and success—a consummate professional with the knowledge, toolset, connections and passion to lead you through every aspect of the publication process.

Rebe Huntman, author of My Mother in Havana

Anne is the kind of editor every author hopes to find–and only occasionally does. She is smart beyond measure, respectful in every way imaginable, and fully engaged with her authors in a manner that is both critical and constructive. She earned my trust from the start, and demonstrated her rare ability to see the fullness of my book’s potential in a way that I might not have been able to do. Anne combines acute genius and deep kindness in her work, unfailingly right in her judgments even when her suggestions might not be expected.

Mark S. Burrows, translator of Rainer Maria Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus and the author (with Stephanie Dowrick) of You Are the Future: Living the Questions with Rainer Maria Rilke

Anne made all the difference in my experience as a debut author. Her sensitive editing of the text and creative choices for cover and layout improved my book tremendously. She was a strong advocate for my book and made my experience of publishing a happy one.

Dana Delibovi, translator and essayist, Sweet Hunter: The Complete Poems of St. Teresa of Ávila

I am most grateful to Anne, who treated my book with kindness and respect. Whatever splash it made was because of her skillful efforts.

Bussho Lahn, author of Singing and Dancing are the Voice of the Law: A Commentary of Hakuin’s “Song of Zazen”

It was an honor working with Anne, from start to finish. My book has a good home (at Monkfish Books) and a bright future, thanks to her care and wisdom.
